![]() The status of Southern-owned slaves became an issue early in 1861, not long after hostilities began in the American Civil War. In Roanoke Island, approximately 3,500 formerly enslaved people worked to develop a self-sufficient community. īy the end of the war, more than one hundred "contraband camps" were operating in the Southern United States, including the Freedmen's Colony of Roanoke Island, North Carolina. Grant with some of his family and staff in 1863, discussed was how 300 of the runaway slaves were fit for military Union service. ![]() One particular Contraband Camp that had 6,000 "runaway negroes" was in Natchez, Mississippi, and was visited by USA General Ulysses S. Thousands of men from these camps enlisted in the United States Colored Troops when recruitment started in 1863. The army helped to support and educate both adults and children among the refugees. These self-emancipated Freedmen set up camps near Union forces, often with army assistance and supervision. They used many as laborers to support Union efforts and soon began to pay wages. In August 1861, the Union Army and the US Congress determined that the US would no longer return people who escaped slavery who went to Union lines, but they would be classified as "contraband of war," or captured enemy property. Contraband was a term commonly used in the US military during the American Civil War to describe a new status for certain people who escaped slavery or those who affiliated with Union forces. ![]() EVERYFITDAY does not guarantee that the platform or parts of the services will be permanently available. The content may only be used for only private, non-commercial purposes. Alphaliner also reported that MSC extended contracts for several 8,500- to 9,500-TEU ships owned by Danaos (NYSE: DAC), with some only taking effect next year. In the charter market, rates have risen to fresh all-time highs in 2022, with “ a growing trend toward forward fixing far into the future, with some vessels extended or fixed nearly one year before being delivered,” said Alphaliner.Įvidence of industry confidence in 2023: MSC reportedly extended its charter of the 6,493-TEU MSC Bosporus for five years at $50,000 per day, with that extension not even beginning until this December. ![]() “The number of container vessels changing hands reached an all-time high in 2021 after shipowners appeared willing to pay almost any price to secure tonnage,” said Alphaliner, which noted that the growing consensus on longer market strength may “justify purchases with delivery deferred to this year.”Īlphaliner reported that there were 572 container ships sold last year “equivalent to a breathtaking 1.94 million TEUs ,” 26% higher than the prior annual record in 2017, a year when sales were inflated by the spectacular collapse of ocean carrier Hanjin. “A growing consensus now suggests that the current supply chain chaos will last at least throughout 2022.”Ĭonfidence in the shipping boom’s duration has propelled the sale-and-purchase market for container vessels to record levels. “Forecasts for a market correction have been repeatedly kicked down the road,” said Alphaliner on Tuesday. With Lunar New Year 2022 now underway and container freight rates, ship charter rates and port congestion still at or near all-time highs, timing sentiment is turning to 2023. Then it was post-Lunar New Year 2021, then mid-2021, then the end of last year, then post-Lunar New Year 2022. The first predictions for a downturn were for October 2020 after China’s Golden Week holiday. “We have capacity in Oakland that needs to be put to use to help shore up the supply chain and support our economy. The timetable for a container shipping correction keeps receding into the distance, which is either very good news or very bad news, depending upon which side of the market you’re on. “We should see vessel calls and cargo volume recover in October and November,” Brandes said. In some cases, import containers have been trapped for weeks near Los Angeles and Long Beach. Import cargo would be available for pick-up within days of discharge from ships.Vessels arriving at Oakland would be able to find clear sailing without gridlock.Supply-chain congestion is likely to grind on elsewhere such as Los Angeles and Long Beach. The Oakland seaport offered some arguments for cargo diversions from Southern California: ![]() The grim results: September import volume at Oakland sank 13% from September 2020, according to the port. But last month, cargo volume capsized and sank.ĭuring September, 54 vessels stopped in Oakland, marking the lowest vessel call total at the port since 2015. And matters have reached the point that the East Bay seaport is openly calling for shipping companies to shift cargo away from Southern California.Ĭontainerized cargo volume at the Oakland seaport is up 4.2 percent in 2021 compared to 2020. Some Oakland dockhands are idled due to the lack of work. “Now, you might see two or three ships waiting in the Bay. “When it was super busy, you would cross the Bay Bridge and see 15 to 20 cargo ships sitting in the Bay,” Hubbard said. The workers came aboard and the logjam eased at the Oakland seaport - dramatically. To ease the logjams, the East Bay cargo complex orchestrated an agreement involving the union, shipping companies and terminal operators to hire more dockworkers. DST switch: Ever get tired of having to waste time resetting your clocks for Daylight Savings Time? On the back of the iP88 is a switch that allows you to easily bump the current time forward or backward one hour.Three alarms: This may not sound terribly special at first, but the sheer variety of settings on this unit make for a nice change from your standard clock radio.Makes me wish that every other device I own with a built-in clock could do the same thing. Press and hold the Time Sync button on the back of the unit, and the iP88 will synchronize its time to that on the first docked iPhone that it finds. iPhone time sync: To be honest, this is probably the coolest feature on this device.Looks like iHome is betting on the iPod Classic disappearing in the near future. It’s a good thing, too… iHome includes six inserts in the box, but they are in matched pairs: two each for the iPhone 3G/3GS, the iPod Touch, and the iPod Nano 4G/5G. Dual Universal iPod/iPhone docks: That’s right, the iP88 has two universal docks for charging your devices, and they accept standard Apple universal dock inserts.Instead, let’s focus on the things that make the iP88 a little different. I’ll not waste your time going over the obvious features here we all know what a clock radio is and what it does. Just looking at it, you know that this thing is substantive and solid long before you ever put your hands on it. It’s a very modern (if stark) design, and whereas some of iHome’s previous products have had a sort of toylike appearance, this is anything but. Gone are the rounded corners and the plethora of colors the iP88 instead flaunts hard corners and few right-angles, and a single gunmetal color, offset by shiny faux-brushed-aluminum dials on the top and a white-on-black LCD display set right in the center of the front speaker mesh. The designers at iHome must have gotten tired of mimicking Apple, however, because the iP88 fully abandons the styling of the previous models, presenting instead a design that is decidedly un-Apple, but also complementary to Apple’s latest products. The descendents of the iH5 have continued in that vein for the most part, maintaining styling similar to the iPod, and becoming available in additional colors to keep up with the ever-expanding rainbow of iPods. The lines of the iH5 were evocative of the iPods and first-party accessories of 2005, down to the fact that the iH5 was available only in white. Designįrom the beginning, it was clear that iHome was designing their iPod-compatible clock radios to mimic the styling of the iPod itself. Does iHome’s latest entry into the market, the dual-dock-wielding iP88 stand out enough? Find out after the jump. This being the case, iHome has not had an easy time distancing themselves from the crowd after all, there’s only so much a company can do to further clock radio technology. Name a company that makes clock radios, home theater speakers, or other home audio equipment, and odds are that they’ve tried their hand at making a clock radio to work with your iDevice. It’s strange to think that it was only four years ago that iHome released the iH5, the first clock radio ever to feature an iPod dock, because these days iPod/iPhone-compatible clock radios are everywhere. Once the students understand how to perform the skill, then we encourage the use of large targets placed at a variety of heights. While students are learning and practicing this skill, a medium-level target is best. If the target is at a high level, the student is more likely to develop incorrect throwing habits. If a target is placed at a low level, the student might roll rather than throw the ball. One factor that greatly affects the initial learning of the underhand throw is the target placement. In this section, we emphasize the skills most relevant to young children-that is, those throws requiring an arc. When the distance to the target is short or if the objective is speed, then the follow-through will be much shorter (e.g., in fast-pitch softball pitching). Activities requiring height (e.g., slow-pitch softball pitching and horseshoes) will require that the follow-through be exaggerated. Often, the purpose of underhand throwing will dictate exactly how it is performed. With the addition of a racket, underhand throwing is essential to the game of badminton. In addition, the critical elements of underhand throwing are very similar to those of the underhand volleyball serve. Underhand throwing is essential to softball pitching, and underhand tossing can be used to assist a fielder in making an out from a close distance in softball or baseball. While many people believe the only purpose of underhand throwing is pitching a horseshoe or playing cornhole, it is in fact an integral part of many sport skills.
